SGI Student Recognized in National Writing Contest
Spring Grove Area Intermediate School is once again celebrating student success in creative writing! Emma Lewis, a sixth-grade student, has been recognized for her outstanding storytelling in the Young Writers’ Winter Wonderland Contest.
The competition challenged students to craft imaginative pieces centered around the Winter Wonderland theme. Emma’s work stood out among numerous entries, impressing the judges with her creativity and descriptive writing. Her 100-word mini-saga will be published in an upcoming Young Writers’ anthology, a significant achievement that showcases her talent on a broader stage.
This marks another exciting literary accomplishment for Spring Grove students, following the recent recognition of three SGI students in the Young Writers’ Scary Tales Contest. The continued success of these young authors reflects the school’s dedication to fostering a love for writing and storytelling.
Congratulations to Emma Lewis on this incredible achievement! We look forward to seeing her work in print.

SMOKY AIR by Emma Lewis
Fear wraps around you like a snake around its prey,
Attacking you right before you start counting sheep,
Provoking terror within you before hitting the hay,
Shaking you like an earthquake, and never making a peep,
Spreading like wildfire through your nerves and brain
It lurks in shadows, a monster under your bed
While you think about injuries galore, and pain
”There’s nothing to be afraid of,” your old man said
But you never listen to the truth, oh no.
Wait, what about another type of fear,
One that grips you from behind,
One that you walk right into
Like the kind you feel when you drive off the road,
The fear you feel when you’re carried off the field,
Done for the season? Weeks? Months?
Or when your loved one dies,
And then they’ve left, never hugging you again.
What happens then, and why?
But eventually it’s gone
Never to be seen again,
The Beautiful Truth of fear, then zen.
